There is more than one type of UV lamp:
1.) The UV lamps used for sterilizing water create low levels of ozone. Not good to keep to close to your fish.
2.) The novelty UV lamps use low level exposure – it should be ok for most breeds.

UV lamps is safe for fish. Just make sure don't to many to prevent the algae growing.

Try actinic bulbs. I use them in my salt water tank to make the fish glow. UV is used off the side of marine tanks to sterilize the water as it will kill bacteria and parasites exposed to it.

all kinds of lighting is used on tanks. you just have to make sure the light isn't to hot as it will heat the water up and kill the fish.

if their made out of used reactor waste then yes (but theyll make you glow too which is really cool =)
