Follow the directions on the unit. You must turn the knob on the gas valve to the light position and hold down the button. You may have to hold it down for a few minutes to allow the air to bleed out. If the pilot light burns and after holding the button down for a full minute ( I like to hold it down for 11/2 min.) it goes out when the button is released you may need to replace the thermocouple. It is a fairly simple job but if you have doubts a professional can do the job and shouldn't cost very much.

You may have an obstruction blocking the pilot burner orifice. This is a little gadget that sits inside the pilot burner assembly. It has a very teensy hole in it. Bugs, spider webs, and trash can block it very easily. In order to remove it for cleaning you have to turn off the gas to the appliance, disconnect the gas line, thermocouple, and pilot tube from the gas valve. Then you have to pull the entire burner assembly from the inside of the water heater. Sometimes you can achieve a temporary fix by tapping gently, but rapidly, on the big tube that runs from the gas valve down and into the inside of the water heater. This will often dislodge the obstruction. Servicing gas appliances is best left to those who do so on a regular basis. They haven't been blown up yet so they must be doing something right........ Good luck.

It's difficult to bleed off a lot of air in the gas pipes by just pressing the pilot lighting button. You really need to loosen a pipe connection near the appliance enough to allow gas to escape long enough to smell it at the connection. Make sure the shut off valve is toward the gas supply from the appliance connection you loosen to bleed the air off from and that you can immediately turn the gas off if there's any problem.

My natural gas company will send out a person to light the water heater pilot-- a free service. They'd rather use their people than have to explain an explosion.
good luck

Sometimes it will take awhile, just keep holding the lite botton down. Did you turn the dial over to light and hold it down.Just be careful so no gas can build up when you try to light it.
