Common belief. I happen to be good at both algebra and geometry. (Though I happen to be working on my doctorate in math.) I think that it may have more to do with your teacher or the projects that you do in your classes in high school. Also if you are a visual learner, you may do better at geometry, but that does not mean that you will have trouble understanding algebra. (There are ways to teach/understand algebra visually.)

Not necessarily -- Algebraic Geometry is widely regarded as the hardest area of mathematics to learn, but if you get good at it, then you will be unbelievably good at both Algebra and Geometry. i have always struggled with geometry - all i see are lines - but got to honours degree level because i never had a problem thinking symbolically
