Thats a really good question, but hese are two different things youre comparing. The government regulates alcohol use to persons under 21 because it "feels" that MOST people under this age wont use it responsibly. As far as joining the military, (i think the enlisting age requirement is 18) the government wants, (or needs) more bodies to help protect our freedoms. So to answer your question, the government puts regulations on alcohol, (21 yrs) because people over this age apparently make better decisions. It is necessary though to have a military, and the overall size of the military will be increased (which leads to a better military) if they allow younger americans to join.

1. Because 18-21 year olds don't vote as much as they should, so politicians ignore them.
2. Our lawmakers are hypocrites, but that doesn't seem to bother them.
How can someone lack the maturity to decide to drink a few beers, but be of sound enough mind to make a major decision like enlisting in the military? Both decisions involve significant risk to themselves and others....but one serves the needs of the state, the other doesn't, so there you go!

There is no factual answer to this question, rather, the answer is "subjective" - it seems to me that the brave men and women who volunteer for our armed services (if you are one, thank you for your service to our country) - are prepared with a rigorous and century+ old training guidline - whereas, when a young person is of age to drive, all one has to do is pass a sophomoric driving test...moreover, an individual who "volunteers" to join our professional military is more likley to take his/her responsibilites more seriously than the average 21 year old - who, statistics prove out, will get behind the wheel of a car and put innocent lives at risk, juxtaposed against the 18 year old who is "controlled" by a leadershp STRUCUTE That drills into the young miliatry professional the awsome responsibility they are undertaking to "protect" their fellow Americans, Allies and friends throughout the world...just one man's opinoin...

Look at it this way do you feel safe sending a 18,19,or even a 20 yo old when he just came out of spending 8 to 12 weeks in bootcamp getting yelled at constantly and unable to get laid into a situation where he is looking at least another year without sex and being ordered around and he has access to alllllllllllllllll sorts of weapons. My God man allowing him to drink and have firearms is a recipe for all kinds of trouble..........

This question gets asked about 5 times a day!
Because that's the way it is!
If you are on a military base you can drink beer. At least you were able to.
I have never seen anyone carded at an NCO club!
So go drink your beer and burn a few brain cells!

You may be on to something here.
If the recruiters could get the recruitees drunk before they sign up, we'ld have won the war years ago.
Also, One should know how to write a sentence before being eligable to post questions. That's for sure. Stop drinking and writing.

I think we should let 18 year olds drink. They just should not be allowed to get a drivers license until 21. Solves a lot of problems...not to mention saving the gas.

Call me names , call me stupid, but I think that any returning Veteran, should be given the utmost in medical ,physical, phycological, social and especially financial help upon his homecoming. If Veterans should desire alcohol drugs, pot, sex, you name it , it shall be provided for one year upon his homecomming. Of course this sounds like an absolute nightmare for our men, but it is Not. These substances could be monitered open mindedly but liberally to help treat the many who's lives have been shocked and awed by war!

I like Bob's answer but really I agree with you it doesn't make sense specially that the government will trust 18 years old to choose (by voting) who governs the country
