South Africa currently has 3 cellular providers: Vodacom, MTN and CellC (and Virgin Mobile is coming soon). Vodacom numbers usually start with 082 or 072; MTN is 083 or 073; CellC is 084.

Sending an sms to a South African cellphone subscriber can usually be done for free via the relevant cellular provider's website. Unfortunately, u usually have to register as a subscriber to use this facility.

Websites which people use are:
www.vodacom4me.co.za
www.mtnice.co.za
www.cellc.co.za

But like i said, u usually have to register as a subcriber to use their facilities (i.e. u have to have a cellular number to do this and they sms a PIN to you when u register).

Your best option would be to ask your South African friend/relative to register on the relevant site and email you the cellular number and PIN to be used to login to the site.
