No leg room, thats a "feature" that comes with all mid-size compacts!
I do understand that, you and your husband are not game for a Japanese tin can, thats the reason you got yourselves a BMW.
Once you ride in a BMW, you'll find it impossible to ride in any other car. If you can stretch your budget by about 30% over the 325i, you could go in for a entry level 5 - series BMW sedan.
Depending on which part of the world you are in currently, you get a 520i or a 525i, they are all overtuned, so you wont have any complains about the power output.

Take a look at the 5 series BMW. You could probably trade in your 325i for purchase on the 5 series.
If money were not the issue? The previous individual who answered obviously doesn't know that BMW 5 series, or even high end 3 series are more than a Lexus.
My suggestion is the BMW 5 series, or you may want to look at the BMW X5 SUV. If you still want German, their is the Audi S6 which is around the same price as a 5 Series, and then you can always take a look at the Volvo's as well.

Depends on what year your car is. The early 325's have very little rear leg room the 2 door even less. I have an 89 and its small in the back. My sister in law has a 92 and I fit in the back no problem.

Yeah, the 3's leg room pretty much doesn't exist.. we gotta take the wife's car when my folks are in town..
My suggestion is to visit the dealership and basically sit in the back seat of the models you might consider buying and go from there..
good luck

Sell the kids...
Or, if that's not feasible, move up to a 5 series. Assuming your kids are and will always be under 6'-4", the 5 series has plenty of space.
