If you are talking about the 21st Century - Money. A huge study was done of 63 major countries in the world to see if prosperity played a role in happiness. Nigeria was found to have the most happy people, tho very poor. America, Canada, England, Italy, and all the major powers were found to be at the BOTTOM of the list. Although we are prosperous, money does not bring happiness. I work in an accounting office and I see it EVERY day. You only need enough to live, give the rest away! (and all the people who answered before me are clueless!)

I think it was more of a taboo topic in the past, so even if people were depressed, they didn't do anything about it and kept it to themselves. Now, people are more open about it, making it easier to go buy drugs.
