Yes -- KOI do make a mess. Often placing gravel on top of the sand in ceramic planter pots with large bases is good.

Koi love to dig, that's what they do
you must protect your plants if you want to keep them
the way I do it is plant in pot, cover soil with medium sized stones
and have the pot just below the water surface, even if the pot is
way below the water the koi can still get in the pot and remove the stones you can also buy plant nets that you sit the whole pot in and the leaves just come thru the netting, most Japanese ponds don't have plants if you will notice several of my water lilies aren't even potted with soil, they are in tubs and covered with medium sized rocks that the koi cannot pick up - so far so good

put the plants in pots and set the pots into the water slightly below or at water level. they will be fine. koi have never bothered my plants. talk to your fish store or a pond store. they can give you pointers.

Are you talking about an outside pond. I don't know. The ones I've seen are pretty docile. I think they need a bigger pond. I had one who kept flipping himself out of the pond until he finally did himself in. Ask at the fish store.

KOI, yes they are wild fish. I have 5 & have never been able to grown plants driectly in their pond. I have to do pots so they can't reach them.

yes, every herbivores fish like to eat plants. Like gold fish, koi love plants as their diet.

my mom has a pond of koi with lots of water lilies and other water plants. I say go for it.
