I can think of two problems.

First, you put on weight cos there is a large amount of calories consumed just before going to bed. When u sleep, the body metabolism slows and it uses less energy. Hence caloric consumption outweighs caloric output, = weight gain.

Secondly, your body digests the food as you sleep. This means that you are not getting enough rest as your body is forced to do work when it is supposed to be resting.

That's the reason why many pple get nightmares after a heavy meal, the body is not at a total state of rest and they cannot enter that deep state of unconsciousness that gives a really dreamless, restful sleep.

Your stomach will produce more acid to digest it than it would if you remained upright and awake after a full meal.

Because you are tired when you eat, you may be bolting the food, so the stomach has to churn to separate it, so that's extra work.

In the very long run, this will increase your chances of having an inflamed stomach lining (gastritis) or a duodenal ulcer. There is a higher change of damaging the lower esophageal sphincter and developing reflux disease (again, partly because the acid doesn't back up when you remain awake and upright as opposed to being asleep and prone).

You are less likely to sleep deeply while digesting a heavy meal. This might lead to sleep apnea later in life. It also means you will spend less time in deep sleep, and that's where the tendons, muscles and heart itself get their repairs.

I'd recommend a real dinner hours earlier and a light snack around midnight instead.

It is a myth that this will cause you to gain weight, but it will cause you to stay awake since it takes your digestive system about 3 hours to fully digest a meal. So, for that amount of time, you will not get a restful sleep. Food, regardless of time, will make you gain weight....eating at night is no different than eating it during the day.

The only thing that could be bad about it is if you were trying to watch your weight. Your body does burn calories while you sleep, but not nearly as many as during the day. Most dietitians will tell you not to eat much after 5 or 6, but that's only because your body won't burn off all of the calories like it might during the day.

No real harm, but that food just sits in your stomach, it might be uncomfortable, you may have an interrupted sleep from having to go to the bathroom or from your body being feuled with glucose. It's not good to do if you are watching your weight because the food will metabolize really slowly.

Other than that, I can't think of anything REALLY harmful about it.

it's pretty bad: no time for your body to digest the food as well as it does when you are active during the day with a charged metabolism. eating late at night then sleeping is a GUARANTEE to pack on weight, strictly in the form of excess FAT.

Any fats and carbs won't be worked off if you eat before bed, thus you get fat.

Plus you being in a horizontal position during digestion may lead to indigestion.

you can get what us singers like to call "the gerds" or gasto-esophagel reflux disease(more commonly called acid reflux). stomach acid travels up the throat & burns the throat, vocal chords, etc. thats why you might wake up w/ a soar throat
