You almost certainly have a USB 2.0 port.

Unfortunately, no external hard drive will ever be as fast as an internal hard drive (at least not in the forseeable future).

A lot also depends on your hardware:
- Your harddrive may be slow... check the RPM's for your hard drive. it should be at least 10,000 RPMS. If not, its spinning too slow, and can't write information quickly enough.

-You may also have a slow processor. USB 2.0 can handle a lot of information, but only as fast as your processor can send it. A lot of laptops still come with Intel Celerons that are quite slow, although they claim to be 3.0 ghz or faster.

Your port is probably usb 1. Try this. unplug your hard drive from the usb port. make sure it's not showing up in wodows. Then, plug it back in. Do you get a message like "this device can perform faster if plugged into usb 2.0"? or something like that in the bottom right of your screen... If so, then you have an old usb port on your computer.

You have to check the specs on your laptop to see if you have USB 2.0. Even with USB 2.0 an external drive will not be as fast as an internal drive.

This over heating is virtually likely why your pc receives warm. One aspect results of a equipment it is operating warm is it receives very laggy and could run at a small share of it is skill to objective to forestall it from overheating. As you stated noises coming from the fan it is virtually actual time to interchange the fan. this is a extremely less expensive fix if it hasn't led to any lengthy time period damage to different aspects. appropriate on your extrenal HDD, it sounds like there is no skill going to the USB ports, this may represent a deeper problem, it ought to easily be some gadget drivers that were corrupt(commonly occurs even as the pc is grew to change into off all right now) yet this may should be regarded at when you replace the fan. an basic equipment fix or repairing your setting up may sparkling up this. good success.
