I am seven months pregnant and I am now living in the forth storey of my apartment (without elevator). I have 3 other small children age between 5 and 2 and I don`t think I can spend some days after birth at any other places. Is it okay to climb stairs the day after giving birth? Will it hurt if I have an episotomy?

Go very slow, I do mean very slow, and then stay in the apartment. Rest between floors as you climb those flights. You really should not be doing it, but if you have to...
Be sure that you have someone come and bring groceries, etc as you will not be able to for awhile.
Are you sure you have nowhere else to go for a little while?

You'll want to take it slowly in the immediate post-partum period. If walking up stairs is unavoidable, make sure that your load is as light as possible. Have the little ones walk on their own. Sit down if you begin to feel woozy or lightheaded.

The biggest issue with these types of everyday activities is that your uterus will be trying to heal. What may seem like a mild innocuous chore or habit can promote more bleeding, etc. Pay attention to how your lochea (bloodflow) is- if it begins to appear heavier, you're overdoing it. That's a sign that you need to stop and rest. Is there anyone that you can call on to offer you some assistance? Family members? Friends? Neighbors? Check to see what services your local hospital provides- sometimes, they will have a visiting nurse who can drop by to see how you are doing and assist if you need it.

What will you be needing to do, that requires walking up several flights of stairs? My advice would be to just set up camp in your apartment definitely during that first week. Stock up on groceries before the birth. Take care of any loose ends beforehand. Unless it's a dire emergency, it can wait. You need to focus on your recovery and adjustment to this newest member of the family.

As for the episiotomy- I've had that and I've also delivered without one. In my experience, the episiotomy hurt more than the natural tears that would occur (in terms of recovery). As long as you have your sitz baths, soothing compresses (warm or cool), and whatever pain medication your dr prescribes, you should be fine.

Best of luck!

It depends on how you feel. After I was pregnant, I could hardly walk for any period of time, yet alone climb stairs. If you are up to it, go for it. I bet you won't be up to it. And an episotomy doensn't hurt when you get it, as long as you are numb. But it hurts like a ***** once the drugs wear off. Believe me. I guess it just depends on how strong of a person you are, and how fast your body heals.

It will hurt if you have stiches. If you can stay home for a few days and the first day after birth you shouldnt be walking any where. That day is for you and your new baby to get to know eachother. Ask friends and family for help if you have to run errands or just help with other kids. But since you already have children, you'll heal faster, barring complications so you should be fine in a few days

It shouldn't hurt if you do it seldom. If you do end up having an episiotomy, soaking in the bath will help with the healing and sitting on cold packs afterwards will help with any swelling. Hopefully you have someone to help with the kids so you can concentrate on healing and finding a rythm with the new baby. Best of luck to you.

are you stuck on stupid? You have THREE KIDS living in a 4 floor walk-up and you got knocked up again? Doesn't matter if it's gonna hurt or not you are gonna have to suck it up at this point aren't ya? Maybe you should seriously think about asking the doctor to tie your tubes when you have this next kid.

I lived in a two story walk up, not as tall, but I had very few problems after a c-section. You'll be fine.
