I know this is a dumb question, but my friend asked, who invented the hitch-hiker thumb jester?

this is from the page below. the best answer I could find on the web. the whole article is really interesting. I would suggest reading it. As for who invented it. I dont know if anyone really knows. it seems logical that you use your thumb to point the direction you want to go. It wasnt hard to understand so when someone saw that they stopped. I dont think anyone will ever know who did it first. probably someone on a horse asked a person walking which way are you going and the guy used his thumb to say "thata way" then they said I will give you a ride. thats my personal best guess. I am fairly sure it was before people had cars but no proof. Anyway here is the earliest best answer I could find.
