been there, done that. it is tough. on the good side you have to talk a lot and really get to know the person well. On the bad side, no frequent physical contact. The lady i dated could not take the infrequent in-person visits. if you are looking for something really serious, it is too tough in my opinion. - but that' my opinion. you will have close the distance to make it really serious.

Always communicate with him/her. Don't let the communication be stopped. Have the trust burning.
