I would definitely recommend the Wild Animal Park. It's an experience unlike any zoo you've been to. Its bigger and better than the zoo, and your preteen won't feel like its childish. Have fun whatever you do!!

San Diego area - SD Zoo, Wild Animal Park
Los Angeles area - Six Flags, Disneyland

Tons of great beach areas.
