you would have to ask every one of them to get an accurate answer because everyone has a different reasoning. Mostly for me it was what felt comfortable had nothing to do with my friends (who didn't dress like me at all) or music just comfort.....but to each their own.

I used to be "Goth", so I could answer that. First off, it has nothing to do with music. It's all about a statement. As you know, Goths have a very unique style of clothing, hair, make up, etc., etc. It's because they refuse to be like everyone else. It's a rebel thing.

It's because the "in" crowd makes them feel like outcasts. Have you ever seen the episode of "Made" on MTV where a "goth" girl wants to enter a beauty pageant? She was a normal girl who was outcasted because she was different. And as I'm getting older most of those girls who were in the "in" crowd when I was in school are married and have babies. I'm still living my life having fun and not tied down. So in a way it's more of a statement to where you are putting them. To the side. I wasn't a "goth" girl but I was a shy quiet girl who tried to made attempts to be friends with the "in" crowd. I gave up. My senior year I couldn't wait to get out of high school. College....was completely different for me. I was someone whom everyone knew on campus because I talked to everyone and was accepted for me.
They may appear weird and strange and angry, but they are still human and have feelings. They also worry about the same things you do too.

same reason all other young people choose their dress - aiming to be individual while also identifying with a group.
no statement involved.
oh, and don't underestimate the goth sense of humor. silliness abounds in the goth aesthetic, but most other people take it too seriously to get it.

That's the way their ancestors dressed. It's their heritage.
When you're talking about the subculture, it's because they think they are original.

its not a statement or for attention, its just them being who they are, its like asking why do preppy people dress the way they do because they are rich, stuck up people?
