Take 30,000 students from the university of Alberta, add youthful immaturity, mix with lots of bars and alcohol, fire up with excitement and voila...out of control behaviour by a very few that have low impulse control.
p.s. most students do not indulge in this bahaviour. It really is a small group of them.

Whyte Ave is the party strip. In the summer, it's great bcause you can walk all along the two sides of the road and see what's going on at all the bars and patios. The problem is that a lot of people drink and most of the bars close at the same time, so people all spill out onto the street and have nothing to do but get into trouble.
Whyte Ave is lined with restaurants, pubs, clubs, clothing stores. Pretty hip and trendy for Edmonton at least.

Whyte Ave*
it's no bad. the ave got a bad rep during the hockey playoffs when a few people got out of control. the people who were acting out were not even hockey fans, they were just there to cause trouble.
there's lots of bars along the ave so naturally where there are bars there is alcohol but it's really not as bad as everyone makes it seem. There are some homeless people down there though but it's an alright place.

Whyte Ave is exactly as stated above.
I had to answer this just to inform the people who think it's a ripoff of the Red Mile:
No, it isn't. It's a street. It was called Whyte Ave before the playoffs, nobody's ripping you off.
It just a place to party and cause trouble, nobody ripped off your 'clever' name for a stupid idea.
PS- Calgary + Edmonton are cysts on Alberta's behind!

Whyte Ave in Edmonton, is a bar scene for the young immature Edmontonians that cannot hold their liquor and their behaviour after a few drinks... very disappointed in their behaviour over the Stanley cup playoffs during the hockey season... these people that did all the vandalism are not hockey fans but just the regular trouble makers that every town/city has...

You forgot the all important group of drunk natives that stir stuff up.
It's WHYTE Ave., not white
Second, during the Oilers run to the Cup, one stupid Edmontonian girl lit off a firework only to have it fly into her face and explode.
All the more reason to come to Calgary. Whyte Ave, is a cheap rip off of the Red Mile!!! 17th Ave Calgary all the way!

Can't really say what people are like throughout Alberta, but from watching the last two playoffs, Calgary seemed much less violent than Edmonton, just more flashers in Cow-town.
But as for why Edmonton is more violent? I suppose there are more drunks in the streets there after the game(s)
