According to tradition, despair is the one unforgivable sin. It is traditionally one of the seven deadly sins. As far as I can tell, this isn't said directly in the Bible, but seems to be based on people's interpretation of Matthew 12:31, where Jesus says, “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”

If this is all true, then many of us have committed the worst sin, whenever we have despaired. Personally, I don't believe it, but thinking about what despair is and what it means to human beings brings some real insights.

There is an interesting archive article in the NYT about despair (see below). The author wonders why and how we humans could ever come to see despair as a sin at all, let alone the worst one. It's worth reading.

The biggest sin I ever committed was sinning when I knew I was sinning and doing it anyway. I had double the guilt and I'm sure double the sin. I use to not have as much control as I do now and I believe my earlier sins and guilt helped me to gain self control as time went on. Sin is not worth the guilt and pain. Surprisingly to me, not sinning is its own reward and I don't feel nearly the temptations I used to.

sin is sin no matter what that sin is, lying is just as bad as murder, gossip is just as bad as murder, it's all a matter of the heart

sometimes the consequences of the sin might be greater or the pain or guilt we feel because of one sin as compared to another might be greater, but sin is sin

Praise be to God that he is not counting our sins against us!
