I like Chico. It is kind of an urbanesque small college town in the middle of a rural valley. The nearest large city, Sacramento, is an hour and a half away. The town itself is situated around the CSU Campus which is a beautiful series of brick buildings. the downtown is cute and hip with coffee houses, funky shops and art gallerys. There are also a few clubs and bars. There are a few creeks running through town one of which is surrounded by Bidwell park, one of the largest parks within a citys limits in the nation. At one point, the creek has been dammed off just enough to create a "swimming pool" effect. The whole city is sheltered by thousands of beautiful tall trees, It is very lush and green there, although some of the trees lose their leaves in winter. The weather is hot in the summer peaking into the hundreds at times, the town seems cooler than the outlining areas due to the creek and trees. The winter is cool and can be grey at times, there is moderate rain, frost and fog, but it rarely snows at that altitude. If you want snow, Paradise and Magaila are up into the Sierras about 15 minutes. Oh, and speaking of Sierras, Sierrra nevada brewery is there and they make tasty beer. The people are a mix, college kids from all over, locals, proffessors, hippy types and farmer types. there can be christian evangelical action in the town square, creepy por lifers, but I think they might be from the outlining areas. I have seen some homeless action, downtown and in some parks, but it is not excessive. The cost of living is low for California, the housing fair by Cali standards, but the problem is lack of high paying jobs. There is plenty of retail, waitstaff type work. There must be one of every big chain store in the new part of town. Target, wallmart, Home depot and Lowes. In and out burger. I could go on and on. anyways, hope this helps, good luck.

It's a cute, but small college town surrounded by farmland and more small towns. The college is an infamous party school, not too many people go there to learn anything other than how to work various types of bongs and discover the anatomy of the opposite sex. It's a pretty area, but not too much happening unless you are affiliated with the college or like hanging out with kids spending mommy and daddy's money.
