Honestly, if you are unsure whether you should travel or go to college...you are not ready to go to college. I was in the same situation some years ago now, only i went to university, dropped out, thought i'd go back to college but wanted to go traveling. When i talked to my mom about it, she told me to go travel because i wasn't ready for school and she was so right! If you don't know what your life passion is, go discover it! Too many kids are coming out of high school feeling as if they must choose college to go anywhere in life and in reality, they have no idea what they really want to do, nor should you at the age of 18! Go on an adventure...learn about life, other cultures in the world. it will give you an education that you can't recieve in school. What you will learn can't come out of text books and if more people took the opportunity to experience this type of education, we would have a lot less hate and misunderstanding throughout our world. Work, save your money and go have fun, find your passion and gain a unique education that will provide you with more wealth than you can imagine right now.

Well, up until college starts in the fall, you can usually defer (easy process, unless you're at a big state uni, where it's usually not allowed.)
That gives you a year to do whatever you please!
Personally, I was going to defer this year and go volunteer Brazil, and i'm so mad that that didn't work out - ANY chance you have to go abroad, DO IT! the college will still be waiting when you get back!
There's so many more things that you can learn that just aren't in a textbook. Esp if you were to go backback through India - you can learn some Hindi - and make business contacts in your travels, which make you all the more valuable as an employee in the future!
Are you already done with high school?? Because if you're not (even if you only have senior year left, you can still do this) - aoply to go on exchange through Rotary Youth Exchange or AFS (or YfU) and spend a year with a family in a host country. I did Rotary personally, and it's awesome. It's also a lot cheaper than backpacking - and you'll get a more thorough cultural experience. And anywhere in the world you go - they arrange big tours around the country/region. You just have to apply in september of the year before you plan to go.
Backpacking in Europe is a LOT more expensive than you would think - train tickets are NOT very cheap (of all things - plane tickets are cheaper) (if you are in europe - get a discount railpass card!) While it may be more "modernized", India would be incredibly interesting. Europe is awesome, I loved it, but it's a bit overdone. India is more obscure, and would make an awesome place to visit!

Go to college and work at the same time. That way you can take a short break after college and hike through Europe with whatever money you saved up.
Really, college is a much, MUCH greater investment. And then, backpacking through Europe probably doesn't cost that much in the end, and it'd be a nice celebratory vacation.

NO!! I went to Europe for a month and took $2000. And I ran out of money. If you don't want to carry a lot of cash on you, make sure you have a debit or credit card that will work abroad. Also, even though you think you will be eating cheaply, in some countries ie: England, France, food is very expensive. I would bring more than $2000.00, better to have more than less! have a good trip

Have you ever thought about teaching English overseas? I think you have to take a short course (a few weeks) and then you are ready to go. Check out the different places that would hire you...make sure it is a reputable outfit. Pick a country that pays well...I think your flight and housing is paid for. You will get paid to teach and sometimes even some of your food is covered. That would be a great way to see a country and get paid for it. A lady from my town is doing it for the second time and loves it.

Why can't you do both? Work during your first year of college and spend your summer between fresh and soph year traveling. There are great trips you will be able to take through your school too; semester abroad. Check that out, then you won't stall your degree and you will also be able to LIVE in a foreign country.

if you want a degree, get to school and get it. otherwise, life gets in the way. get the schooling over with then you will be free, and wiser, to pursue your other interests. i dont know what you could do to save money to go to all these places...i mean, if you dont live at home and are getting help by not having to pay living expenses.
go to school! then, you can make some real money so that you can have opportunities to do the things you wish to do throughout your life...for you and your future family. good luck!

save ur money and travel. India was fun for me :D Plus, you'll get back with a completely different outlook on things and you might change your mind as to what you want to take in school.
