I don't know that you do. I was just thinking tonight of someone whose heart I broke over 7 years ago. It's tough to know how much influence I've had in life and how sometimes there's been pain involved.
Then I remember that the purpose of life is to learn, and that we all are masters of what we're learning, there are no accidents. So, I've called forth into my life my perfect teachers. Some of these have been especially corporeal (bringing pain into my life), and others have been kinder. But each have taught me great things, or given me the opportunity to learn great things.
In this light, I see that I could not have done anything that she didn't need to learn (although I have a choice how I treat people). So, I forgive myself, and I let go of the situation. If that person is still learning that lesson in her life, she's going to have the pain for a very long time. She may confront you with it, to get through the lesson. She may move on more quickly.
In your new light and knowledge, be open to assisting her with the things that you can do. Respect her and love her, at least as a sister, and see what shifts. If you don't get to see her again, respect her in your heart and use the lessons you've gained from the experience to lead a more clear life.
Good luck.

The fact that you're even asking gives you some credit. Unless you were completely heartless, I suspect there was more to it then you doing all the heartbreaking. Have been the breakee and the breaker, there's always something wrong with the realationship in that scenario, someone has more heart invested and it is smothering to the other and really? You both know it, you just acted on it. Unless you totally led this person on, promised forever, used them for sexual purposes and discarded them (which I would doubt given that you care enough to ask this question), you can't take all the responsibility. Spend 8 hours in service to the community to exonerate yourself and let it go... (my big thing right now is volunteering for all my friends and apparently you're not exempt! how about helping in a "dog"pound, get it?)
