Meaning Of Rude

I think because a lot of rudeness comes from ignorance. Either ignorance of what is proper, considerate behavior and speech, or ignorance about the person/place/thing they are being rude about. For example, racial comments are extremely rude, but they are also absolutely from ignorance. Anyone who is knowledgeable about another race would not be rude about it.

Ignorance in itself isn't necessarily rude. Let's face it, we are all ignorant about something or other, and a lot more than most of us want to admit.

There is also rudeness that doesn't stem from ignorance. Somehow, that is less forgivable to me. Anyone who is knowingly rude, who knows what the most offensive thing they can say is, is just an angry, unhappy person.

I really doubt that when people misuse the word ignorant, that they actually consider that the person they are accusing is without knowledge, uninformed, or uneducated as to the rules of a polite society. They just mean the person they are accusing is being a dick. A lot of these answers are giving the typical English speaker (read American) entirely too much credit.

Because most people who are rude lack knowledge. They do not understand how to deal with people, and are ignorant of etiquette and proper customs and manners.

If one acts rudely, then one might be said to be ignorant of or lacking knowledge of the rules of polite society, or polite discourse (sometimes referred to as etiquette). In this case, "ignorant" as "rude" is not so much incorrect as it is a more specific or particular instance of lacking knowledge.

Probably because those people are assuming that one's "rudeness" is caused by a lack of knowledge (or, "ignorance") regarding the subject at hand. (A lot of times, it's true.)

The word ignorant is evolving from a term once before used to mean "without knowledge" to a new definition of "acting with rude behavior without knowing they are rude". As the new definition is accepted - more times it is heard.
