I am an adult woman and have become good friends with a neighbor. We laugh and have good times. We talk on the phone daily. She comes from a wacky background though and has social anxiety disorder. Whenever we go to a party or barbecue with other friends she freaks out and the way she handles her social disorder is to latch onto me and make fun of me. It is humiliating to have a so called friend make cracks about how I look in a bathing suit or recently kept imitating the way I was laughing. I know it bugs her that I'm sociable, happily married, etc and all she has on me is that she's thinner. She brings this up constantly. Why would a good friend do this? I'm very close to ditching her for good.

There is no way to beat around a bush with someone like that. Tell her outright that she has insulted you, and that it's not the first time. If she does it again at another function, tell her in front of everyone that although you tried to talk to her in the past, obviously, she doesn't understand - that you just will not put up with that type of behavior - tell her to go take her medication and walk away.

I know you don't want to be mean, and feel sorry for her "disorder" and what not, but - it is not a license for her to act like a moron around other people. If she doesn't take your feelings into account then she is really no friend of yours and you should just sever ties.

I think you should ditch her because I delt with a few people like that in the past and they turned out to be back stabbers.
