I know what you're talking about. When I was young, I learned to my great surprise that African-Americans had a distinct scent. I thought I was the only one who noticed it, though, so I never said anything.
I think it has to do with racial sensitivities. Some races are simply better adapted at certain things, and I think that white people (predominately) pick up on the scent of black people (predominately) better. Of course, I'm just talking out of my *** here, and have no real evidence to back that up.
I also don't think it's a "stink" necessarily, though some people may dislike the smell. I actually recently walked by a black woman (who was wearing no perfume), and I could smell her from nearly four feet away. It wasn't a stink at all, I actually -loved- it, and was tempted to ask her out just so I could smell her more.
I also have a sensitivity to female scents, though, so it may have been some strange mixture of the two that made her smell so good.

All people can stink. But I think in answer to your question, ignorant people think this because it is widely known that africans have dryer skin and hair and need to use oils, lotions and such in their daily regiment. But its just plain idiocy on their behalf.
Hey live it up I say. Because africans have to use lotions and such, I believe this may be part of how they stay looking younger for so long. Much more so than white people. In that, I am definitely jealous. Black people do look years younger than what they are.

Tony,
I went to an HBCU and yes I did encounter some native Africans who did not use deodorants, but they were new to western culture. As far as all Africans, be fair to yourself and broaden your mind, don't accept/entertain generalizations like that from anyone. It is pure ignorance that the "people" that you are talking about would even voice such shallow understanding.
I have also encountered Mexicans in my line of work and some of them have an odor that irritates the hell out of me, however I know that it is not all Mexicans.
You meet people where they are and work with them from there.

I've heard that some people think that whites smell like dogs when wet. :-o We all have a sent that is natural to us, and heck maybe it does vary by ethnicity, but as long as most of us are not the ones (of all tones) that TRULY stink because they have no hygiene, then we are all fine. ; )

Ive heard that stereotype but I know white people that do too. I think it depends on how often you take a bath and whether you use right guard regardless.
