when you're reading a scary story or watching a scary movie, why does it make you feel better to open the door even if no one is going to come in?

your family is outside your room and you're alone inside your room....doesn't it make you feel better when you open your door when you're watching a scary movie or reading a scary book and your family is outside? they won't come in unless they want something...

Because your brain has calculated the odds AGAINST a CRAZY AXE WEILDING MANIAC, storming into your house, just at the very moment, your watching a scary movie or reading a scary book would be astronomical.

What are THOSE ODDS?

When I was a young teenager and my parents were out for the evening, I used to run around the house holding a butcher knife and begging, out loud, in a loud voice..."PLEASE! I WANT A ROBBER TO COME IN HERE! PLEASE! I WANT TO STAB HIM! PLEASE! WHERE ARE THE ROBBERS?!!!! I WANT TO MURDER SOMEONE!

I had figured that the odds of 2 crazy people wanting to murder someone ending up in the exact same location and at the same time, would be infinitesimal.

I felt safe as a kitten.
There's your answer.
Your brain has played the odds.

OH!!! You wrote in more details while I was writing my answer!

Oh, WELL, THAT'S DIFFERENT!!!!
In MY case though, I always felt safer with my bedroom door closed.

My parents were scary.

Well, maybe it's coz it gives u an assurance of not being locked up inside a room and u can switch it off and go out when u want. If the room is dark, keeping a door open brings some light, so that could be another reason.

Because then you can relax....and be sure that no one is going to come in. You obviously don't know it for sure....or you wouldn't feel compelled to open it and check.

Scary movies and scary stories make you think scary things....and it's on your mind at the time.

i actually like the door closed
with other people in the room
it makes me feel safe for some reason...
i think its just the fact that if something bad (scary monster)
was to come through the door
it would attack the other people
and not me (so i think...)

Presumably, it makes you feel like you have an escape route... or maybe you just have some good associations- emotions are hard to figure out when you don't have much information,
