The warning is meant to draw your attention to the word "average," since a river that's 50 feet deep in some places can still be an average of three feet deep. Get it?

The answer is in the word 'average". For the river to be an average of three feet deep, it may be 3 feet deep in one place, 1 foot deep in another and 5 feet deep in yet another. You wouldn't want to try and wade through 5 feet of moving water.

Even though something appears to be certain, there are always variables to be considered. The river may be an average of three feet deep, but the average is based on the length, width and varying depth of the entire river...could be some really deep places. You'd better know how to swim!

Because, assuming you're a person of average height (men, 5'9" to 6'0") a river that AVERAGES 3 feet in depth, could range in depth from 0 to 6 feet deep. So part of the river is going to be 6 feet deep, and a guy 5'10: will not be able to breathe, and will drown.

It is saying that just because the river averages 3 feet, which you can walk through, doesn't mean you can walk through it. It might be 6 feet in the middle and 1 inch on either side.
Basically, don't jump to conclusions without really looking at the facts or don't believe averages because statistics can be manipulated.

If the AVERAGE depth is "waist deep", then actual depths may only be "ankle deep" but could also be over your head, which would make wading across the river, i.e. crossing on foot, dangerous.

"average" means it's six feet in some places, 1 foot in some places, nine feet in some places. I guess it means to really try to assess any situation before you get into it. (?)

Because you will not walk across to the other side in a straight row.
