when a fruit tree (plum) fails to produce any fruit - why and what should be done to make it produce fruit?

If it is an old tree that's been neglected, try giving in a good prune.. I had a Victoria plum which was very sad looking thing, pruned it hard and the next year you could almost hear it smiling at the masses of fruit it produced.

Plums are usually self pollinating so one tree shouldn't be a problem, i
Is it a young tree? It may be too young to produce fruit
Did you fertilize with Nitrogen? This produces leaves but not fruit

I happen to have plum trees in my yard that produce each year unless they are frosted out in spring. I have learned that you need to have both a male and a female tree for cross polination to take place. My neighbor has one of the same breed of tree but many years is tree has done absolutely nothing unless it happened to be cross polinated with one of my trees. So now each year we tie a moist blanket to a fourteen foot two by four and go out when all the flowers open and brush all three trees with the blanket and two by four to aid in the cross polination of his tree. It has worked so far. Hope this helps.

depends if the fruit tree is self pollinating or if it is a variety that requires another plum tree in the near vicinity to pollinate it. could be you got an ornamental plum that doesn't bear fruit. if possible,check with the place you bought it.make sure you fertilize and water regularly.

it really is an incentives for animals to help spread their seeds. each of the end result consists of the seeds of the tree. it should be a huge pit or small seeds. even as animals selections the end result, some will carry the fruit with them. even as they end the fruit, the seed will be displaced in the diverse section from the mummy tree.

It also could be a bad year or no bee's pollinating enough or flower falling before pollination- Did you spray the tree for virus etc.
