You may try to feed it. If it eat all the food in five minutes, than you may add the food for another time. Feed it twice a day. I feed my Betta with 7 mosquito larvae a day.
You may keep saying Betta instead of fish.

Just feed it once a day. They're very hardy fish and if you miss a feeding or two, they'll still be fine. If kept in a small bowl/tank, overfeeding is more of an issue that underfeeding, as it lowers the quality of the water very quickly.

Anytime mine is hungry, if I walk by the bowl he swims towards me and stares me down. Although they don't need much to eat, I didn't feed mine for over a month when I left town to get married, came back to find him living in an inch of water and very hungry. He lived another year or so.

Mine swims around a lot when he's hungry, I feed him twice daily 5-8 pellets. Drop one pellet in the tank, if he takes it then add another, don't put all in at once because they sink.
