Why is the family called "Nuclear"?

Nuclear or "close-knit" families are advantageous for children to be reared in because the parents make more efforts in listening to what their children say and are more tuned to their needs; overall, the kids tend to grow up healthier.

However...................

Some nuclear families can be a tad too "close-knit", and an excess of closeness can be just as dysfunctionally damaging; where the children emulate their parents and have no sense of their own individuality. This can be just as dysfunctionally damaging as families with NO closeness whatsoever.

There's nothing wrong with growing up in a Nuclear family....as long as there's an intelligent degree of balance.....which is rare, I suspect in America.
