If I study about 1-3 hours everyday this summer, in addition to practicing 2 hours of music, do you think my chances of getting burnout during the school year are high (burnout to the point of getting worse grades)? Because right now I'm devoting at least 3 hours everyday to work, and I'm afraid I won't have the motivation to get straight A's my sophomore year once it comes around.

And what I mean by work is not like jobs or anything; I'm just combining my time with studying and my time with music and call it "work".

You will get burned out at some point, but most likely not enough to significantly drop your GPA. It all depends on why you are studying during the summer. If you are studying because you want to learn and be a better student, then your chances are low. If you are studying to ace a test like the SAT then you will burn out studying for that, but the material would have stuck. If you are studying academic work (like for you chemistry class next year), then I would say that you aren't doing yourself any good studying during the summer unless a teacher recommended it. Summer is designed to give your mind a break (and to harvest), so unless you need to, spend you summer having fun and doing life-long learning (like reading all the books on a 100 greatest book list) and leave the studying for September.

Practicing music is great if you like it. If not, it is okay to cut back.

Work? Do you have a job? Suppose you are working for three hours and practicing music for two and studying one to three hours. That is at most eight hours per day. That is probably less hours devoted than you would be during a given school year. Right? So, if you pace yourself and get enough rest and make time for some fun too, you shouldn't have to worry about burnout during the school year. Study hard, work hard and play hard. Hope you get straight A's your sophomore year.

Perhaps. Just remember to do something fun on the weekend. I'm in college, but I remember around spring quarter, I was REALLY SICK of studying. Ha ha. I became angry at the whole college and everyone. Now I'm enjoying my summer while I can. Take lots of breaks or play on the weekends.

Sounds like you're a self-motivator and high grades are a priority to you. If you're not burnt out now, I don't think it'll happen in high school simply because you enjoy it....yes, there are people out there who actually enjoy learning and the work it involves. It's also supremely good that you are also highly involved in a non-academic interest - it helps balance. : )
