Dim lights, comfortable but not lazy furniture, good candlelight dinner, a little Marvin Gaye, and next thing you know you'll have baby bettas runnin' the show

First, think hard about actually breeding him. If he is from a pet store he could have a lot of genetic defects you might not (or ever) know about, plus he could be much older than is recommended for breeding. Also, they can have a LOT of fry in one batch.

If you do breed them, get a book or several reliable websites beforehand. They can give more details, and pictures, of an optimal breeding tank. It usually consists of a gravel-free ten gallon, a heater, lots of floating plants, half of a styrofoam cup, and a glass or plastic "chimney" to house the female before breeding so she can see the male and vice versa and prepare to breed.

edit: I would really say not to breed, even though I know it's tempting. I have four males myself and work at a pet store. It's very tempting to keep taking fish home and I've seen lovely females that I'd like to use to breed, but there are no shortage of them and you might not even be able to sell them all. Also remember that all males will have to be seperated at a fairly young age, do you have space/time/money for that?

I had a betta, and they are fine in a regular little fish bowl. No need for a filter, and just make sure the water is warm, not hot and not cold. The little rocks are fine in it and usually one plastic plant is nice for it. There is no need for a big fish bowl if you have one fish. Just a little one is good. Goodluck with your fish :-)
