There are many bikes on the road that the owners have made "louder" for a number of reasons, and it's not restricted to Harley riders. The newer touring metric bike owners have learned that letting the surrounding drivers hear you is a safety factor, as well as enhancing performance. Get off your cell phone, turn down your radio, and stop starting a sentences with a preposition, and even in your obviously limited vocabulary and use of punctuation and proper English, Harley Davidson is a proper noun and is capitalized. Who's the retard now?

Well, a bit of both, with some role-playing on the side ... like those folks who wear costumes to have sex.
They wreck performance, shorten valve life, and annoy the world, not for "safety" as some dirtballs might assert, but rather for "image."
This is not to say that there are not some (a few) real riders on Harleys. There are. I have met them.
But most of the people who slap down the bucks for a Hardley or a Big Mutt, or a Iron Mule or whatever, are not buying a MOTORCYCLE, at least not in the same way you did, when you bought your motorcycle.
They are buying a BIKE. An image. A community. A dress code. A ... well, I was going to say "lifestyle", but the vast majority of these people are "weekend warriors". But in fact, they are buying a dream.
How else could you explane the "denim diaper" look of jeans and chaps?
So don't get too hot and bothered by their loud exhaust ... give them a wide berth as you zip by. You'll be happier, and they will be too.
Cheers.

All of the major motorcycle manufacturers are subject to the same noise / emission levels. Stock Harley Davidsons are pretty quiet! It's when people get them home that the trouble starts. A lot of people think it's cool to have loud pipes, or that it is "safer" to ride a bike with loud pipes (totally untrue). So I guess we just have to blame it on ignorance and a lack of respect for everyone else out there on the road. Sad.

Actually, Harley-Davidsons have a fairly muted stock exhaust (the sound is even copyrighted). The loud bikes you hear are the result of people replacing the stock exhaust with an aftermarket setup. There is, however, a good reason for this. Drivers seem to have a hard time noticing bikes on the roadways with them. I have many friends who ride, and not one of them hasn't had many incidents where inattentive drivers seem to not notice them, and do things which result in the rider being nearly run off of the road. One friend of mine in particular had a nasty accident, in which a car changed lanes, hitting my friends bike, and putting him in the hospital for a time, followed by a few months of traction and many painful months or rehab. Ask, any person who rides, they will tell you the noisy exhaust is so that other people on the road will hear them and realize there is a bike nearby, so they can keep an eye out for it.

Loud pipes scare animals and small children, but life saving - not so much. Check out the pic - Iron Head with 2" drag pipes - and yes they are loud. Stock HD pipes - not loud at all. Triumph racing can - stately purr, but not loud. Most motorcycle accidents (caused by others) are caused by cars merging into or pulling out in front of motorcycles. Not saying loud pipes can't be heard, but for them to be truly effective they should point forward, not to the back. In the event of an impending accident, most riders will need to be breaking rather than reving their bike.
So, loud pipes are for annoying people who talk on their cell in the car and play their music too loud.... Air horns save lives!

harley has to follow the same laws with their new bikes as anyone else. stockers are as quiet or even quieter than some other brands. people like to modify their bikes and exhaust system changes are #1 on most peoples list.
you also seem to have a very prejudiced view of the motor company and the customers-maybe you should get your head examined in that regard.
by the way, have you heard a v-may with straight pipes? or a crotch rocket with aftermarket "racing" exhaust? these will put any open piped harley on the trailer, noisewise.

.Loud Pipes Save Life's. Been riding over 35 years. I know. Also I like loud music. What's with the "retard" crack? You can't even spell correctly. Is this prejudice or stupidity?

Hey ragman, don't you think your comment was a bit presumptuous? Are you really that angry? Before you start name calling, focus on your typos. What's really pathetic is your question makes no sense at all.
