Have her see a doctor. Someone her age should talk to a doctor before you do anything drastic.

Firstly don't do anything extreme like starvation, as when you do start eating again your body will turn anything your eat into fat and you will gain back anything you lost and more.

I don't believe in the fad diets, what I do is try to cut out anything that comes in a packet, as its not natural and usually has a lot of hidden fats and chemicals. The best thing to do is eat fresh fruit and veggies. If you get hungry and need a snack eat fruit. Try making a fruit salad by chopping up some of your favourite fruits and putting it together. Like a apples, oranges, pineapples, strawberries, etc.

Drink 1.5 to 2 litre of water a day, it keeps your body healthy and actually helps you burn off calories better (and not just from having to pee all the time!). Don't eat 2 hours before you go to bed, just think what ever you eat then is just going to turn into fat. Eat a good breakfast, like a hard boiled egg or a poached egg (avoid fried foods), a good breakfast will give you energy for the day.

Don't just change the way you eat for now, rather try to make it a long term food choice. It you go on a diet you deprive your self of thing and you will fail. Instead make a choice to eat better for your health.

DONT stop eating junk food! you know why? because if she stops she'll get the BIGGEST craving and when she does she'll eat so much, so eat whatever just eat proper proportions thats all, also you have to do some type of excercise she could start out just doing 30 sit ups a night remember no weight should be put on her knees. excercise gradually not all at once, walking is the same excercise as running it's wierd but true, so walk with her at least once a day for half an hour to an hour, if she has a dog go with her or tell her mom to go with her to walk the dog. its great you are so supportive, have fun with it don't make it seem like it's a drag for her, have music take ur ipods with you!

Girl I got the same problem as you. My lil cousin she's 11 and weighs 150lbs. I thought there was no hope but about a month ago I was doing an exercise video Billy's BootCamp (from the taebo guy) and my cousin thought it was fun so ever since that day me and her have been doing the video together and shes lost about 15lbs so far in just a month. Just find something your cousin likes to do and something that she would find as play and not work and do it with her. Remember she can't get thin over night and it takes time.

Support help and encourage her to lose weight, go for walks together, (jogging helped me). Little things like cutting out 1 unhealthy thing from your diet helps (stop eating chips). The most important part of loosing weight is having someone to help you. One thing that I did when I lost weight was my best friend and I did Richard Simmons Sweating to the Oldies. Im not an old lady i;m only 21 and it was really fun to do the workouts. I know it sounds funny but hey it worked. Good luck and i really do wish her the best of luck! Hey i lost 60 pounds in less then a year just doing these simple things.

katie is right. your cousin will just have to start eating healthier food and in smaller portions.

Remeber though that the weightloss should be slow and gradual. a crash diet (for want of a better term) will in the long term result in the weight going back on. you should be looking at a loss of one to two pounds loss per week as a maximium.

remeber also to reminder her to stop dieting but still eat heathy when she reaches the recommend weight range for her height.
you don't want her to develop an eating disorder like anorexia.

good luck and i hope all goes well.
you failed to say how tall she is so i'm gonna guess at around 4'6" to 5' so at that height i'd estimate that around 100 to 120lbs would be about right.

which means that she should be down to her ideal weight within 20 weeks of the day she starts.

remind her to cut out all sugary sweets and sweet drinks like coke, lemonade etc. oh and typically in my experiance the so called "diet" meals can be more fattening per portion than a meal you cook yourself or a regular ready meal. so where possible get her mom and her to prepare the food themselves, remebering not to use a lot of salt and preferably none to very little when preparing food.

Try and find a recipe book full of healthy but fun / appealing dishes like fishcakes and roasted veggies etc...mâke the experience into a bonding session, by going to the supermarket and chosing the ingredients together, and cooking nice meals that are good for her. I think that at that age it is more about educating her that healthy food is not always boring, and that exercise can also be fun, and hopefully you can sway her to a better lifestyle that will set her up for life.

I say leave the girl alone, it sounds like your the one with the problem. Encourage the girl to be happy who she is and tell her how nice she looks. Jesus freaking christ, isn't this world beating up on her enough without her cousin agreeing she needs to lose weight? Tell her to eat less and get exercise and in time it will drop off, but until then look in the mirror everyday and see the wonderful, loving person you do.

the best way to help is to boost her self-esteem. don't mention her weight or diet and help her to feel loved and wanted for just being her. going for walks together and going swimming are fun activities but just invite her along to things. if she starts complaining about her size change the subject. what you focus on will hang around so change the focus and the problem will change too.
