People played Rugby football; but there was no specific rule against the forward pass at one time, it was just considered bad sportsmanship.

When they started forward passing it came to be accepted and the game was obviously no longer Rugby football, so it was just football.

It didn't come to be called football, it started out football. Football was always called soccer - in America.
