How can we even get to work if they keep going up? Will our children be able to buy gas to drive to a job they get right out of high school? Maybe family members should get big homes and keep everyone together so they can share expenses and rides?

Inflation will adjust things.

This is a wake up call for us to find ways to curve our energy usages. Already American Airlines is doing so!!! They are routing their planes to go with the currents rather than a straight line which uses more gas. This longer route actually saves fuel because the current allows the plane to use less gas; and pointing directly into the wind uses greater deals of gas.

A few answers before me did have wonderful energy saving ideas for individuals.

However, Inflation is the key. There will be a natural equilibrium in the "Wages" for employees, and the "Products". We will probably get double the salary within the next ten years, and be paying double the prices for movies ... Just think, in ten years you too can sound like a geriatric old foggy and be saying, " I remember when the price of the movies was only $9.00", but forget at the same time that you only made $36,000.00 a year instead of $62,000.00 a year .

To historically look at what happened, talk to someone who lived throught the 1970's and 1980's and you'll see that this too will pass!!!

We aren't going to do anything, except pay them. Has anyone wondered why there is no mass transit in 95% of the U.S.? It's because the oil, trucking and automotive industries lobbied hard against all mass transit, particularly trains. Now, because Americans were complacent, and just bought the cars like they were supposed to, we are essentially a market made deliberately captive.

It's not too late, but will large numbers of people demand change? Right, I don't think so either. Didn't you ever wonder why you have no real choice in the matter? Most of us simply have to buy gasoline.

Soon, we'll pay $4.50 a gallon, then the Feds will give a monopoly franchise in electric and gas powered vehicles to a loyal contributor, who will become the next billionaire, and we will all be compelled to buy what they are selling.

The truth sucks, yes, but it's still the truth.

-Public transit
-stop buying SUVs and buy more of the hybrid vehicles
-turn off electronics when you don't need it (like turn off the tv when you leave the room)
-stop driving to the convenience store for a pack of gum
-don't let your engine idle while you're waiting in the car for your husband (or vice-versa) for the a/c...plenty of a/c inside where your husband is
-only use a/c on the highway and open up some windows while you're on city streets
-stop driving around trying to find the closest parking space to the door; find the closest parking space when you get into the lot, and walk the rest of the way

You want me to go on? These are only SOME of the things you can do.

I was just watching Glenn Beck. I dont like him, but I like his answer to this question.

Beck suggests that since we are such a "brand-name-loving" culture, we should start using this to our advantage. Say, charging 100 dollars per gallon for "Gucci" or "Versace" gas. People pay so much for a regular cup of Starbucks coffee... wouldnt they prefer the "better" gas??

Then, maybe once the people who care about labels are dishing out their cash for that "better gas", the rest of us can fill up on the cheap stuff from Wal-mart.

I don't know about you, but I prefer obtaining gasoline naturally--by hunting it in the wild, YEEHAW!
