Should I Get help? My little sister (formaly a math genius) claims that she cant understand her new math and physics teachers because of the heavy accents? (I had professors with foreign accents in the past in high school and in college but never had this problem! )
My little sister claims that she has approached her instructors in the past and explained that she doesnt understand (the lesson!) when in fact it was just the accent.. however being respectful choose not to state the real reason for her not understanding. She claims she is not the only one! What should i do??

That's a serious problem, and she might be persecuted if she tries to speak about it honestly with the teacher. There is probably nobody she could talk to that would do anything about it. She could try to get switched to another instructor that speaks better english, but other than that if I were in her shoes I would just ask the instructor to repeat every time I can't understand what they are saying. This way the instructor may clue in, and then try harder to speak clearer.

Maybe she should spend some time just having discussions with her teachers about regular things. I always find that a heavy accent is difficult at first to understand, but once you talk with the person for a while you get used to it and have no trouble understanding it. If it's not just her, then maybe a group of students can get together with the teacher for lunch once in a while, or after school. Have her explain to the teacher that the thick accent is difficualt for them to understand, but they would like to fix that. I don't think a teacher would be insulted, especially if the students are trying to fix that. Besides, most teachers teach because they enjoy people of the age group they are teaching. The teacher would proabably be flattered that the students just want to talk.

What should YOU do?
Go back to studying english. Obviously you went a different route if she's younger and you can't tutor her.

What should SHE do?
Well, if other kids in her class have the same problem, then they need to buy a math book and stop relying only on the heavilly accented teacher, and then they need to form a study group.

If worse comes to worst, there's always tutors and clubs around a college or a school which will help struggling students.

Your sister is making excuses. I did well in Math. My GRE was 750. I never understood any of my high school teachers. You learn math by yourself. If you can't learn it by yourself, you're just lazy. No matter how dumb you are, anyone can learn basic math skills if they work hard enough. The smarter you are, the quicker you learn. Just like anything else.
