Deja vu is French for "already seen". It means the sense that you have already seen something or already been there when you know that you actually haven't seen it or been there.

You could explain the feeling in terms of being psychic or past lives or something like that. But the scientific theory is that there must be some circuit in the brain that generates this feeling, which sometimes gets activated for no good reason. This circuit normally gets activated when we actually have "been there" or "done that". When the circuit acts on its own, then we have that deja vu "feeling".

The term déjà vu (French: "already seen", also called paramnesia) describes the experience of feeling that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously. The term was created by a French psychic researcher, Émile Boirac (1851–1917) in his book L'Avenir des sciences psychiques (The Future of Psychic Sciences), which expanded upon an essay he wrote while an undergraduate French concentrator at the University of Chicago. The experience of déjà vu is usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eerieness," "strangeness," or "weirdness." The "previous" experience is most frequently attributed to a dream, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience "genuinely happened" in the past.

The experience of déjà vu seems to be very common; in formal studies 70% or more of the population report having experienced it at least once. References to the experience of déjà vu are also found in literature of the past, indicating it is not a new phenomenon. However, in laboratory settings, it is extremely difficult to invoke the déjà vu experience, making it a subject with few empirical studies.

Check this Deja vu theory out - a friend of mine posed it and I think it sounds reasonable:

Okay, our eyes take in light and ears hear sound at 'real time'

Our bodies are phenomenal machines; however, admittedly imperfect, all one has to do is process the sights and sounds a nanosecond faster than usual (for whatever biological reason) and everything could appear to be happening as if it had already happened.

Good answer for those who are rationally-drive and not prone to reincarnation or spiritual phenomena.

Deja Vu means that you have a memory of something happening before when you know that it hasn't. Maybe you had a dream about it before but just forgot. They say that we dream every night but most people don't remember. Deja Vu is another form of esp. (extra sensory perception)
