I am Italian. And do not get crazy I know the PK was not justified against you guys, but neither was the red card. With a good ref, 11 on 11, without a bull **** PK call who knows. They did great. Yes I was surprised, but it was a good surprise. They played good football. good luck next time. You should be proud.

Well you know as an Aussie you hoped they could. You thought they could but it was still so exciting that they did. So as much as you could say it was expected it also wasn't as anything can happen in a match. Good things are there for Australia now. They picked up some great experience playing Brazil, Italy and Croatia who are all top sides. They don't have to aim to win just aim to improve and better the performance they gave this time ie aim for the 1 round further and then who knows what will happen. My only sadness is Guus Hiddink departing and whether whomever takes over can do the job equally well or better. Because if they can't we risk going a step backwards again. But now they deserve Aussies to get behind them and support them for the next four years not just for the month of the WC. Love my Socceroo's.

Soccer-who's? Just a touch of humor there - no I was really surprised and never expected that they would have such a strong side!! I think that they were so unfortunate in that penalty goal kick and guess where the controversy lies, right at Italy's door!! Lots of swirling talks about that little incident......lots of my friends who are more experienced in understanding the game better than me thought that it was deliberate "roos" ("ruse" humor again) dive to get them the penalty goal. The entire match was marred by that "referee decision" which is reallly hard to prove but I saw the smirk on the player's face which gives me room to doubt that it was a genuine foul so Australia could easily be a good contender for the final so I would urge your team not to lose hope to keep at it and I'm sure they will be bouncing back for sure!!

I think they have had a good World Cup.
Guus Hiddink have done a good job, even though I think he made some mistakes, especially in the game with Italy.
With Japan, Cahill (late) entrance was fundamental for the game (2 goals), but Japan lack of experience (3 goals in 8 min. in the last 10 min. of the game). Yet, it showed some character on the Socceroos.
With Brasil they did not do so good, but they had the best Team in the world in front of them.
The game with Croatia showed again some character, with a late equalizer from Kewell, probably the most important player they have (with Viduka). And again, some of the merit goes to Hiddink and his way of "assembling" player on the field.
The game with Italy was a big Hiddink's flop: they played the second half with an extra-man, but their play was too slow and too predictable, due to the presence of only one forward (Viduka) marked by Cannavaro and five midfielders (versus only 3 from Italy). The addition of a striker came too late and the foul in the penalty box was not the best choice of play for the Australian defender. They had a larger ball possession (too slow play and midfield superiority) but the chances on goal were superior for Italy.
If I have to give them a vote (1 to 10) I will give them a 6.

I'm extremely proud of the socceroo's, they showed they can play amongst the world's best. I can honestly say that i didn't expect them to make it to the 2nd round but i can say i was truly hoping that they would.....and long and behold they sure did!!!
Well done to them.......they can only get better from here.
A big thank you to Aussie Guus ;-) it's a shame he has gone to Russia now, he done an equally fantastic job in coaching the roo's and bringing out their talent and probably out of their comfort zones as well. He doe's like to experiment with players from what I've read, so i think he has done a great job.
Good luck to the socceroo's in August :-)

The Socceroos where impressive and surprising. Before the World Cup my brothers and I wrote down our predictions, and I have to say I was pretty much right on with everything except the Australians advancing past the first round, and my favorite, Spain being eliminated in the second.

I was seriously expecting Australia to be in the quarterfinal. I'm sure Italy manipulated the match.

I was impressed by their game, and I suspect that they would have beaten Italy in the quarterfinal had Kewell been playing. It was really ashame that the guy who did the bicycle kick at the 89' didn't connect; he was so close!!

I was definetly surprised but they played a great cup! I wonder how they'll be in 2010. Hopefully they'll be better, then they'll definetly make it to the R of 16.
