There are a few in our area in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, but not nearly as many as 20-30 years ago. We still go every now and again, and the line up to get in is always very long, and it is usually packed. You have to get there very early to get a good spot. It's a great experience. We love it. It's a great part of the summer time.

Gatesville Drive In Movie Times

There are some general reasons why drive-ins didn't continue. Namely:
- Limited times when movies can be shown
- Austin gets HOT even at night!! It wasn't comfortable
- Lack of business/revenue compared to more comfortable venues

Since you asked this in Austin, I can tell you why they closed down in Austin. The last drive-in in Austin shut down several years back (about 15 years now). Before it closed, it was showing "adult" films. It became pretty seedy and had issues that required the police to make appearances pretty regularly (frankly, there was open homosexual activity).

We have 2 to chose from. I love them. It is great to go a bit early with the kids and let them play a bit before the movie. My kids are little and love movies but have a hard time sitting still for two or more hours and ask lots of question. I don't have to worry my kid talking or moving around bothers the other people.
You can't beat the price. We paid $12 for 4 people to see 2 movies. Oh yea, we got to take a bunch of snacks and drinks. Another savings.

Actually there are some still up and running. And they are really cheap too!! Where Im from in East TN. There is one and it plays anywhere from 2-4 movies and its only $7.00 and you get to sit through all the movies. The only bad thing is its closed during the winter season. I love to go to the drive ins, they are a lot more private....and you dont have anyone talk in your ear or putting their feet in your back.

There still are theaters outside, like in Gatesville Texas, but most closed down because it was to expensive to keep them going because you could only show movies at night.

Apparently they were not popular enough to stay open?? Its sad coz they are like a blast from the past kinda thing. I loved going to the drive in. Our towns drive in only closed last year i think.

In southern California I only know of two that are still open. One in Riverside and the other in Barstow.
The land that they were on became so valuable as office buildings and homes, the property was sold to make way for them.

Gas prices - unless your willing to let your gas burn for two hours to keep the air conditoning running - a must in the south.

Mosquitos

No surround sound

One plus would be - I wouldn't have to hear everybody else adding thier own soundtrack
