Here is an article from Mother's Wood-Burning Almanac which answers the question nicely :)

P.S. My favorite wood for burning is white birch.

Properly dried and cured hardwood like oak burns hotter and cleaner(less smoke) than pine and cedar which are softwoods. Hickory on the other hand which is a hardwood snaps and pops while burning which is unsafe because of the burning pieces poping out of the fireplace. If you want a good scent to go with it try some dried apple, peach,or any fruits trees, but do not use alot and hopefully if you do this in a fireplace you will have a screen just in case it pops!

Hardwood burns best, longest, and hottest. Soft woods produce a lot of smoke.

soft is good for getting it started but the hard wood burns much longer and gives off more heat.

hardwood, seasoned (kept dry, preferably bucked to length and split) for at least 6 months burns best.
