My friends say that I should act more Latina!(They are Latina by the way) They say that because they say I have "good hair"(i think thats BS), SPeak mostly english(though I am proud to say I also speak spanish and well), am light skin(since when is skin suppose to tell you how Latin you are?!), and because I was brought up embracing AMerican and spanish culture. I am 20 now and consider these people good friends of mine but I am like okay, shouldn't you be glad that I am different and that I embrace many cultures. I would like to say that I am not hurt by what they say because I consider myself a strong individual but its getting to the point that I am feeling real bad about myself and just want them to understand me. How can I make them understand that I consider myself Latina but I was just brought up with customs that are not only Latin?

I've had the same problem with being African-American but I don't mind. In my case, people that have said I'm high maintenance and not really black are people who are just straight ghetto. They aren't educated and base how a culture should act on stereotypes alone and not on an individuals own personal qualities. I truly believe that education. experience, and opportunities have a lot to do with who you are and how you handle yourself. Besides there is a time and a place for everything so just be yourself and ignore what other envious individuals have to say. Matter of fact get a custom license plate like mine that says 4U2NV and that will really make them talk...lol.

If they are really your friends than tell them that you are your own person and the way you act is up to you. Whether it is Latina or American be yourself and feel good about if they are your real friends they will accept it.

Baby girl I feel you! Alot of times I got called a wanna-be white girl because I don't use "ebonics", because I don't wear clothes that let all my stuff hang out......
I know you love your friends but what you have to remember is this. You are not your friends. You're a grown woman with your own thoughts. You come across to me as a young woman that's not only intellegent but also open minded. And from one open minded sister to another I'd like to say. "Thank You" and "You're not alone".
As for your friends, I'm not trying to say anything bad or negitive about your crew but....Your friends are just not being open. Your friends are being totally closed off. This is actually a bad thing because they're restricting their intake. Think about it this way. Say you were in a 100 room mansion. And in this mansion was a piece of knowlege in each room. Now say you had full access to each room in the mansion, you'd learn alot of stuff would'nt you? Now as for your friends, they're not bad people at all. They only have access to 10 rooms in the mansion you see what i'm sayin.
Little sister, continue to love yourself and respect yourself to keep learning about yourself and other cultures. Doing this will only enrich your life.
Tell your friends maybe they might want to try being more open about not only other races and cultures and ways of doing things but themselvs as well. You never know little sister you just might expand their minds.
Stay strong. Don't worry about the hickups.
Best of luck.

A good friend will totally accept how you are. No one can be of a "lesser" ethnicity just because they do not look like it or act like it. I think that you have a very good head on your shoulder and that you should not listen to these friends---you are who you are and it seems to me that aside from your good head you also have good common sense. If you cannot be yourself, who can you be? Stay the way you are, because that's who you are, and consider making friends who do not try to tell you what you should do....Good Luck

Selin: You have a problem that you have to walk away from. Sorry, but you either lose them, or your self esteem!

You are you. You must be proud of who you are girl. Put your best foot forward, and well, these are not good friends, and shallow at best.....

Move along and better yourself with education, and life in general--new hobby in the horizon perhaps. You have not got time to lower yourself girl.

Move along, and you will do well, before you lose all of you.....

Love yourself first,
and all will work out....

luv
Ava

they're the ones you should feel bad about. are they slaves to their ethnic identity that if they see some nice clothes they have to stop and think, wait, is that latino enough? what about the color blue? is it ok for me to like blue or is that not a latino thing? i'd like to have a white car, but don't most latinos drive black cars? i guess i'll have to buy a black car because it's the latino thing to do. give me a break.

tell them that you are who you are and they can either take it or leave it, but you don't want to hear anything else about it. if all else fails, start making fun of them for not having "good hair".
