There is the "parent" answer that kids want to look cool. In a way that's true, some people do it so they can fit in with a certain group of friends, and cos everyone in that group may be smoking,so the pressure is on them to smoke too.
For some other teens, it's because they might have grew up in a family that their parents or siblings smoke. So they think it's okay to, and they do.
But to me, smoking sometimes bring you a sense of relief, and calmness, like it makes you a little high, and it helps some people "de-stress". For teens, the pressure of school, family, friends can cause a huge amount of stress on them, and they find out that smoking seems to calm them. So they turn to smoking. And the minute you finish a cigarette, you would have become hooked to it.
There are many reason why teens smoke. Just ask a few, and there would be different answers.

Cold turkey is always the best way to to it.
Nicotine stays in your system for 72 hours. If you can survive 72 hours without a cigarette, cigar, nicotine patch or gum you are 75% of the way to quitting. Once your body no longer has the physical craving for nicotine it's just mind over matter. Find something else to do with your hands and mouth, knit and chew gum, use sugar free suckers, whatever it takes for the first three weeks. Most quitters that last 3 weeks stay quit for life.

Though it's a very small part of the book, the resurgence in teen smoking is discussed in The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.
Good book; worth the read.

Any human being who is bored can potentially get themselves in trouble...regardless of age. Kids are alone more and more these days, with no structured schedule, left to their own devices. There is an overall decrease in parenting and therefore an increase in delinquency. When will people learn that saying "No" is not enough. For every behavior taken away, a new one must replace it.

To be cool and be like their friends. Then they get addicted and are unable to quit. This is the reason most teens begin smoking.

They think it's cool, but it's not, Yeah it has increased over the years, sadly. It mostly comes from peer pressure. Smoking can make you cough alot and can cause health problems later in life, such as lung cancer
I do not suggest smoking.

I think they think it is cool to smoke. When I started that was why I did it. If I were as smart as I thought I was, I would never have started. Been smoking for about fifty years. How is that for being stupid.

im not sure. sthomas27 said to look cool, but people should know by now that you just look stupid when you smoke... I actually have seen a decrease of smokers in my area because our stater recently banned smoking in(or within 20 feet of an entrance to) buildings.

to be cool,hip, rad,your choice.
to be accepted
to appear older
to be different and contrary to the rules....
All the same reasons any of us smoked for the last 100 years.
In many ways the more things change the more they remain the same.
