Actually, the gulf of mexico is called "the emerald coast" because of its distinct green color. It's not very blue at all.

if you are picturing the blue carribean waters, clear and pretty, think again. Not that the gulf isnt the nicer coast, but niether coast has clear water.

the color of the water is dependent on depth. deeper water is darker due to lack of reflected light from below the surface.
