I am over 40, and for the past 6 months I have been trying to catch up with today's rock music by listening to a radio station that plays "modern rock". I learn new artists everyday and it's an exciting journey. My favorite band thus far is called "Rise Against"

No, not my favorite, but I do like "Swing Life Away" very much. I haven't heard anything else from them. If you are looking for rock without it being metal, also try:
"I am the Highway" by Audioslave
"Only" by Nine Inch Nails (it's really a beat poem)
"Who Wants to Live Forever" by Breaking Benjamin (Queen remake)
"Perfect Situation" by Weezer
"Wasteland" by 10 Years
and many, many more. Breaking Benjamin is very solid, but can be heavy sometimes. I also like "So Cold" by them, too. Enjoy!!!

How can you tell the "modern" bands apart when they all sound the same? My advice look into Audioslave or stuff from the 90's when different bands actually sounded different. I'm not saying they all had their own sounds but most modern music it sounds like there's just one lead singer and he rotates bands.

No.
Most modern rock sucks, especially pop punk. Tool is just about the only modern band I listen to regularly. Classic rock will always rule.

I am 19, and I think most "modern" music sucks. I've never listened to any Rise Against. *wanders off to find her Iron Maiden CD*

I like them. Have you heard their new song "Ready To Fall"? I don't know if you'd like it since you are of the older generation, no offense....
