Adobe is a resource hog, if you have less then 256mb ram that would be your problem. You should have more then 512mb ram to run it effectively.

I have seen this happen if your trying to open a PDF file either in Internet Explorer from a link or sometimes even by double clicking on a file say on your desktop. What is happening is there is a dialog box in the background asking for you to agree to something.
Try using to see if there is another box in the background, also try running Adobe Reader by just opening the program and not by opening a PDF file.
If that is not the problem then try a reinstall but I would do a uninstall then install. If all else fails there is another reader that is pretty nice called FoxIT.

Like the man said use Foxit
but if you are keen to retain the greater functionality of Adobe Reader, try a free utility like PDF SpeedUp which launches Adobe without all the unnecessary plugins loading

Foxit Reader is small (the download is less than 1MB), so it downloads quickly. It doesn't need any installation, so you can start to run it as soon as you've downloaded it.
And It starts up immediately, so you don't need to wait for an annoying "Welcome" screen to disappear.
Foxit Reader is extremely easy to use, just double click it to start and then click open button to open your PDF document. If you want to print, click on "Print" button. If you want to change the page layout for printing, select "Print Setup" from "File" menu.
Foxit Reader runs on Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP/2003. It is provided by Foxit Software Company free for non-commercial use.

Most probably you have to download and install it once again. Make sure you down load the latest version and the right file for your specific system.

Your RAM memory must be at least 128MB.
Any Adobe products loads all of its libraries before it runs.

uninstall it and download the latest version if you don't have it and reinstall, you might check if you have downloaded the right version for your computer, PC or MAC?
