Holding is when a player is deliberately held by another player when he doesn't have the ball

You guys are close, but all wrong. As an offensive lineman, you are TRYING to limit the defenses mobility using your hands. That’s what you do. But you are limited to pushing/shoving, a "pancake" block is when you get your hands on the defenders chest and bullrush him backwards, usually into the ground. (A pancake is essentially the equivalent of a sack for an offensive lineman, an exemplary play.)

Holding is when you use grabbing or pulling motions to altar the defenders movement, by grabbing an arm, jersey, or the clever and rarely called inside of the pads ( refs don’t see it usually, you can actually choke someone pretty bad with their should pads if you know how...thanks coach.)

The distinction between what is a legal shoving motion and an illegal "hold," is sometimes hard to make and leads to many of the arguments over calls.

The defense can also be called for holding, they are allowed to try to impede the offensive players in the same way the offense is, up until the ball is thrown. Once the ball is in the air, if the defense impedes the offensive players movement, its "pass interference," ...if the defense slows an offensive player down before the ball is thrown by grabbing pulling etc its "defensive holding."

And as much as I can appreciate soccer, having played both growing up, I find American Football is a far more engaging game. It matches the brutality of gladiatorial combat with the athleticism of *soccer* with intellectual chess-like play calling. Play calling is distinctly more complex in American Football, and the athletes are generally superior specimen.

An NFL team would loose, badly to a soccer team at soccer, but it would be a game. Id bet a bunch of HB's, WR's, LB's and DB's would be damn good soccer players if they pursued it.

A pro soccer team would literally be broken in a quarter by an NFL team at football. Zidane or Renaldino would take one hit from say a Jevon Kearse and literally snap in half.

let me say that freeman is close but it is a certain type of holding that basically eliminates the persons mobility such grabbing at his uniform or some case the face mask.

First of all, Although I admit soccer players have much skill, they are the biggest pu$$ies I've ever seen. They wouldn't last 2 seconds in an American football game. They'd be shipped off in a body bag so fu*$ all you soccer fans that diss American football. All you have is soccer, and some countries are good at hockey when it comes Olympic time....and that's all you're good at. We have multiple sports in this country bitche$ and we're dominant in them. Where's Zidane, I'll headbutt that pu$$y myself.....

and sorry, holding can be offensive or defensive and it has nothing to do with who's holding the ball. It's when someone uses their hands and usually grabs a jersey or body part and HOLDS them from getting to someone. Offensive Linemen usually get the most holding calls from trying to make sure the defense doesn't burn them......

I don't know a lot about footbal but I think that holding is when a defensive player holds back a reciever (the one who catches the ball) and prevents him from being able to catch the football.

holding has nothing to do with holding the ball too long. holding is when an offensive player who is blocking grabs ahold of the player he is blocking. or when a defensive player who is defending a receiver grabs ahold of the receiver before the ball is thrown. if a defensive player grabs a receiver after the ball is thrown, it is pass interference instead of holding

holding has nothing to do with who has the ball, but occurs when one player prevents another player from going in any direction due to the use of a hand to stop the other players movement. It usually occurs when one player closes his hand around the other players jersey, arm, helmet, etc. it can be either offensive or defensive player who commits the offense.

hey tcstyles24 lets see you dominate a soccer ball and then you talk, american football is for rednecks that dont like to practice to get any skill. omg i can catch a ball, im so super awesome! :o, and i can run with a ball and try my best to avoid people whos trying to catch me! omg, im so awesome... even a 5 year old can do that, now lets see you do a few tricks with a soccer ball, letss see you keep the ball up without it hitting the floor. soccer (the real football) is the world's sport, except for the country of rednecks... go back to your nascar and ball catching. omg you can use your hands, awesome... now use em to go f urself :)
