I have a 2001 Impala, found someone to buy it but he found an oil leak that i did not know was there. It goes from the top of the engine and you can follow the trail of oil all the way down. How much will he be paying to fix this? I want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off by going down on the price because of the needed repair.

Its hard to see exactly where it starts - you can see it kind of close to the top of the engine block and again farther down. Its not a lot of oil but its obvious its been there a while. I already agreed on a price with the guy and its more than I was offerend anywhere else I was just wondering about the leak because I know absolutely nothing about cars.

I took it to be looked at and found out that it would be at least $500 to fix it. Apparently it's a common GM problem. So I sold the car at the lower price and I'm just glad its not my problem!

Bad head gaskets usually cause a drivability issue with the car. If it's just oil trickling down from the top, it should be a valve cover gasket. Valve cover or oil pan gaskets are usually the first to go. This car might need some extra time replacing one of the valve cover gaskets depending on which bank oil is leaking from. If it's the rear, they may charge a bit more for labor. However, it's not an extensive job so you should be in the clear. Heck, you could even just drive on it until it gets worse.

Seems like everyone is just sure it's the head gasket or valve cover gasket. Check your sensors first. The oil pressure sensors have a tendency to leak. Then, move on to a closer inspection of the valve cover and head....but I'm betting on a 20 dollar sending unit. Good luck.

Sounds like a valve cover gasket, usually they are no more than 10-20$. You may be able to fix it yourself. I would say it should cost no more than 60$ for a shop to fix. Depends on what their hourly rate is though.
If you go to autozone and show them the leak they will tell you if it is a valve cover gasket you need.

searching it will be very just about loose; fixing it may value thousands of greenbacks. relies upon on the position the leak is placed. If that's on the pan seal, you're searching at vast money, because the engine will likely should be bumped off. similar element for rear seals. the front seal is a lot a lot less extreme priced, yet nevertheless not low-cost. i'd make investments in a case of oil, stress the motor vehicle living house (checking the oil typically and topping it off as necessary) and take it to a relied on mechanic (convey a lot of money or be prepared to soften down your mastercard!)

It could be something as simple as a spill from the last guy who added oil. If your unsure, take it to your mechanic for a look then consider going to the potential buyer if he chooses to do so.
