If you're talking about something you can have, it's like a savings account...just cash for the most part. This term is usually used by brokerage accounts; when you don't own any stocks or bonds and just have cash, it's sitting in your money market account...the return isn't truely an interest rate like a bank, but is the closet equivalent to a bank savings account at a investment company.

If you mean the "Money Market", that is the term for trading short term interest rate products among banks. They borrow and lend each other money over night out to a year. they do this by issuing or buying certificates of deposits, commercial paper, repos, etc.

The money market is a securities market that deals mainly in short term debt and monetary instruments. Usually these will mature in less than 12 months and are very liquid, such as Treasury Bills (T-Bills)
