Depends on the State, and sometimes even the city. The ATF has ruled that airsofts are NOT firearms. Any law that applies to guns does not apply to airsofts.
As others have mentioned, the police will assume it IS a real gun, and react accordingly, red tipped barrel or not. I'd keep it in the trunk, or in the back seat, at the very least out of sight, and NOT in the glove box. I own several airsofts, and I simply use a little forethought and planning, and never have any trouble taking them anywhere.

Hey I am 14 and I play airsoft through the Minnesota Airsoft Association. At least in my state, you have to be 14 to operate a airsoft gun with adult approval. Your son wants a $15 pistol, for what I do I have a $300 rifle. He probably just wants to shoot at targets, I play in a military simulation. Airsoft is fun and safe if you ALWAYS wear eye protection. It is necessary and required. And in my state, it is illegal to have airsoft guns in public without a gun case. Its as simple as that. I had a spring walmart pistol for a long time, and I liked to shoot it at a sticky target inside my basement when I was little. If I were you, I would let him as long as he ALWAYS wears eye protection and never shoots anybody, unless they are also wearing eye protection. Also, if your is not mature enough to handle a airsoft gun without pointing it at anybody and wearing eye protection; he does not deserve a airsoft gun. Its fine, just be safe. And tell him he should treat it like a real firearm. Happy airsofting.

It depends. If he has it in a case (doesn't have to be locked, just closed) its ok. If his car is searched he needs to inform the officer that he has an airsoft gun in his car. If anyone sees it they could call the cops which could get him in a lot of trouble. My recommendation, don't keep it in the car unless your transporting it and when you do make sure its covered and out of sight.

According to airsoft policy in a crime an airsoft will be treated as a real weapon. So the same probanly goes for having it with him I defenatly would not sujest it. One other thing if he gets caught with it will not matter if it is loaded or not it is just having it that matters

Airguns are illegal to carry with you in most cities, although ironically enough legal to sale and purchase.
Worst possible scenerio, he brandishes the weapon in a manner which would cause a police officer to believe it was a real gun and he gets shot.
Usual scenerio, he gets a warning for carrying an air gun in a public place. Most police officers wouldn't cite him for that unless it was a second offense.

If he was to grab the gun, draw the gun, or otherwise make a fast action towards the gun during a traffic stop, he would more that likely get shot.

I would not think so. It is not considered a "lethal weapon".
