Braxton has it, the name gila is named after its original discovery location. And the monster part probably arose from the fact that the first person to pick one up probably ended up bed-ridden for about a week in incredible pain.........that is enough to make anyone call it a monster.........hahaha.

The first Europeans into the American Southwest encountered this beaded lizard along the Gila River of Arizona-New Mexico. Hence the name Gila Monster.
