My opinion is that they are really just stupid people who don't know that they're stupid, because they think they're smart and don't realize that the reason they think what you are saying or doing is stupid, is because they are too stupid to understand it!
For example, at work today I had left a message for a staff member on voice mail. When I was leaving work, I asked another staff member to call me if the 1st staff member called. Then she said, "doesn't she have a phone?" Like I'm so stupid that I couldn't pick up a phone, nor did I want to state the obvious that I had left a message, as I think that most people would have figured that out!
This person continually tries to HELP me think and then gets offended when I start getting snappy about it! To me, it insults my intelligence when someone has to question the obvious and I always try not to insult them by not overstating the obvious and risk being condescending. Does this make sense to anyone but me?

I can't STAND people like that. I think they're just smart-alecs, but not in the fun-loving good way. Try patronizing them. If that doesn't work, just say, "Or so the Germans would have you believe" after every obvious statement they make. If you can't beat 'em, annoy them. That's what helps prevent people who work in offices to commit suicide.

it's a form of conformity. Some - actually most people - uncritically accept whatever values or ideas they've been taught by society, never questioning whether these ideas make sense or not. It's also called dependent thinking. The reason they say that is because they uncritically accept the circumstances without question.

I don't mind when people state the obvious, I think if you are unclear about something it's best to ask and obvious question then to do it wrong.
Also, Some things obvious to you are not obvious to everyone else. Not just because of intelligence it's because of what given information you have at that given moment.

You're stating the obvious by saying that people say the obvious. Everyone knows that everyone states the obvious. Yet, I just stated the obvious by saying that you state the obvious by saying people state the obvious. And I stated the obvious by stating the obvious that you stated the obvious by saying that people state the obvious. And I yet again stated the obviszhgvkirhdybtcsehymo,caibeurouvlhearpyhi5nearo;ihgqp45trhnbto;algfnbm

Some folks have just too much on their minds, anxiety, worries, stress, that they end up acting stupid when an obvious question is asked. It's not that they are stupid, they are just stressed out.

It makes complete sense, but isn't that stating the obvious? I never get how the obvious staters don't understand how annoying it is. My theory is they just like to hear themselves talk.

Well, they're dumb. No doubt about that. But I try to just shake my head and shrug it off. Try.
